The Indigo Press is a newly established independent publisher based in central London. We’re looking for an ambitious Sales and Marketing Manager to establish and nourish the key relationships that will sell our books. Job Description


As part of a small team and a new company, the role will involve the identifying and contracting of printers, distributors and warehousing providers in advance of the launch of our first titles. The main responsibility for this role is to establish and develop a sales and marketing strategy for The Indigo Press, setting targets for each acquired title in the required markets and devising a strategy to achieve these targets.

This position will report directly to the Group CEO and the Publishing Director and will involve collaboration with the literary agency, bookshop and events company that form the rest of the group. Regular participation in Editorial Acquisitions meetings – in liaison with the company events manager, foreign rights and retail teams will also be required to provide feedback on titles under consideration.


  • Participate in discussions and decision making regarding design, price and format for each acquired title

  • Establish relationships with national and international retailers, both print and online

  • Develop and implement national and international distribution, warehouse, wholesale and sales strategies

  • Create sales budgets and forecasts


  • Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and brand strategy for the Press

  • Contribute to MILD Group sales and marketing strategies

  • Provide strategic input and market research for new acquisitions

  • Develop and implement marketing strategy for each individual title

  • Develop marketing materials for each title in liaison with Publishing Director and Artistic Director

  • Develop and implement strategic plan for Social Media

  • Liaise with Events Manager to manage sales at festivals and other non-conventional sales outlets

  • Analyse and present data and insights to internal and external stakeholders

  • Participate in key trade exhibitions and events

Experience and Skills Required

  • Excellent relationship-building skills and a demonstrable history of professional achievements

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relationship management skills 

  • Excellent English (both written and verbal) with good communication and interpersonal skills and telephone manner

  • Proven digital marketing skills, including web analytics and design software

  • A strong awareness of global marketing trends and techniques

  • Highly organised and able to prioritise time efficiently

  • Self-motivated, professional and assertive

  • Knowledge and understanding of the adult fiction and non-fiction book market and a passion for independent publishing

  • Proven experience in sales and key account management in trade book publishing including experience of selling into key online accounts

  • Excellent project management and decision making skills, including budget management

  • Solid marketing experience in trade book publishing, both fiction and non-fiction

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment (including editorial acquisition, design, events, merchandising, rights and retail)

  • Demonstrable ability and experience of industry software and IT systems

  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship/Content Management Databases
